I am inspired by a number of people; for various reasons. One in particular is a friend who is now facing (and fixing) the results of their food addiction. They had to deal with their addiction to alcohol and other drugs before tackling the extra weight. Slowly but surely they are seeing results; physical and mental. So proud of their hard work and bravery to face some deep issues.

My sister inspires me; she is spending part of her sabbatical by volunteering in Thailand with Children of the Forest. http://www.childrenoftheforest.com/

Barbara Jordan may be dead but she still inspires me with the courage, strength and tenacity. She was the first woman ever to be elected to the Texas Senate. She was the first African American woman to be elected to Congress from the deep South.
She stood as a strong inspiration in the mostly male arena of Congress. She was the moral compass of the Watergate investigations.
I remember watching a boring coverage of the investigation and listening to the men pontificate and avoid stepping on anyone’s toes. All of a sudden, this strong black face asserted herself into the hearings, asking straightforward questions and demanding answers. It was truly an inspiration that has carried through into my life.

My mother, her life may have not been monumentally difficult, but I am not sure I could have faced the challenges she has as well as she did.
She didn’t bat an eye when I came out to her, has always been welcoming toward my partners. She’s not perfect, but I can count on her always being “in my corner” what ever comes.
She has lived longer than all her family, except for one brother and a great aunt (who lived till she was 93)… At 80 years old she is still going strong, giving me boxes of books she has read every time I visit.
She not only sends me ‘care packages’ of ‘bargains’ she finds when she surfs the thrift stores (one of her favorite retirement activities), but sends me things that she knows friends of mine either collect or are looking for. A former manager of mine still gets the occasional collectable ‘nutcracker’ from her.
A lot of my strength in being a woman, a lesbian, and activist, I got from her (and the women in her family). My love of learning and reading she always fostered. This is a woman who supported her daughter’s love of science and math in the 50’s and 60’s. By the time I was in 6th grade I owned a microscope, a telescope, and belong to some ‘science kit of the month’ type club.
I also grew up with her telling me and my 2 sisters, that she would disown us if we got married before we were 25. She would say “otherwise you go from your parents home to your husband’s home and you never have a place of your own.” I think that is pretty incredible from a woman born in the 30’s.
These things are but a tip of the iceberg, for reasons why my mother inspires me!
