The only one I ever really supported was Queer Nation, because it wasn’t interested in kissing up to our enemies or reluctant, shallow friends. Otherwise, no-one – I support organizations that reach out on multiple levels. When I see what the supposed agendae of ‘my’ community are, I just want to cry.

I support my local community center, because it offers services (like HIV/AIDS testing and counseling), a youth group’s cyber lab, and has a gallery of local LGBT artists’ work, in addition to having great social groups meeting every night of the week. It also has office space for the HRC and Equality Florida activist groups, so I can keep up with the latest activism, and a lending library, so I can keep up with the latest books.

I support Out Youth because this crazy homophobic world is trying to kill our kids and they deserve a safe place to fearlessly be themselves. And because, as Out Youth’s Gabe Padilla said at last year’s Creating Change Youth of Color Plenary, “Radical queers are gonna fuck shit up,” and I want to support them in doing that.

I support Out Youth because they help the most vulnerable LGBTQ ages: 12-23 year olds. At a time when fitting in, being accepted and figuring out who you are is difficult, Out Youth is there to make sure the kids in the LGBTQ community find their way. There is counseling, group events, group therapy, parties, contests, games and various other activites that allow for healthy self esteem growth and a sense of community. The legacy of Out Youth is seen in the devotion that alumnae have in coming back to volunteer and wanting to stay involved. They are the best kept secret in Austin…been here 20 years!!

I support The Trevor Project, which runs a bunch of crisis and suicide prevention efforts targeted toward LGBT and questioning youth, including a 24/7 lifeline and educator resources. Our community has a lot to work on, but it will all be moot if the next generation doesn’t survive to experience and contribute to the progress. Trevor saves lives and I am proud to support it.

Well…HRC because despite my issues with them… someone has to do the dirty lobbying. I support LGBTQ youth projects whenever possible because kids are the most vulnerable and are our future, eh? When I have $$ (which isn’t often these days) I support NCLR because they do great work. I also support GLBTQ theatre and I am not so sure why anymore because the “G” is about all I see, at least in my town.

Indiana Stonewall Democrats, National Stonewall Democrats and Indiana Youth Group.
Most of my money stays local because we need every penny we can get to fight our local bigots. I do donate to HRC and though I have not donated to them yet, I think that Freedom To Marry is doing good work.

Horizons Foundation and not just because I work there. So few queer people (less than 6%)financially support queer endeavors I’ve tried to change the attitude about who can be a philanthropist for 30 years. If we don’t take care of ourselves, who will!?

I support the Rainbow Health Initiative not only because I support dealing with health issues in the LGBT communties, but because they are truly inclusive of bisexual and transgender people, not just lesbians and gays.

I created my own LGBTQ organization–more like a movement, actually, when lesbian actor, Cathy DeBuono, expressed anger at the Mainstream Media’s use of inaccurate, inappropriate imagery in covering LGBT news. I responded to her outrage and being a member of the mainstream media myself, I created FAIR is FAIR. As a straight California reporter & LGBT ally,I would like to see all of Mainstream Media take the FAIR is FAIR Pledge–ensuring FAIR and accurate reporting on LGBT people and issues. All one does is go to the FAIR is FAIR Community Page, click “like” and sign your name on the wall. We have nearly 250 members and supporters and it’s all FREE. I don’t want your money, just your support! Thanks.

These are the queer ones. Horizons Foundation, Trikone, Equality California (although I too prefer to live in sin), International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission, Astraea Foundation, NCLR, Aids/lifecycle, Frameline, Queer Women of Color Media Arts Project (QWOCMAP). I agree with Jewelle, if we don’t take care of ourselves…then who? I tend to give to organizations that often get overlooked by the majority of queer donors.
