Missed commencement for both my B.A. and MFA, but if you had been the speaker, Kate, I would have definitely been there! In fact this could be a wonderful gig for you.
High School graduation: Beardstown Illinois May 1970. If we had a graduation speaker, the recreational substance I enjoyed prior to commencement prevents me from total recall. Since Beardstown is the buttend of West Central Illinois, I am thinking there was NO graduation speaker. College? Well, by the time I finished my illustrious college career, interrupted many times by my efforts to find lesbian life and finally occuring in May 1981 (math: 11 years from high school to college graduation), not only did the University of Missouri St. Louis not invite a speaker, the nice hard cover folder they gave me was…empty! Seems a failed remedial math exam (see above) kept me from my diploma in Elementary Physical Education. Miss Berger, help!
I remember that college graduation, Sue! Mostly because of the after party and the somewhat unfortunate drink-off at the confluence of your father and my mother…..
Well if it’s any consolation I went to school run by nuns in Montreal Quebec. I got asked often if I wanted to have lunch in their private lunchroom, haaaaa!!!! But alas! I did not need the wrath of God upon me. I think some of us growing up went to school with a Sister Margaret Mary, and she was our principal, and she was the one who gave the speech at our graduation, ahhhhhhhh!!!
I can’t say who I would of preferred,I didn’t have a chance to think about it, it was to scarey listening to her, wondering if I would go to hell, cause all I could think of while she spoke was who else in my graduating class might be a lesbian.

My commencement speaker was Bono. I was pretty okay with that.

Ronal Reagan was my speaker. I almost streaked the scene but the secret service was scary. I would have preferrede Golda Meir.
