My mum and dad were both such characters – my mum quoting Shakespeare as she sailed around the house, my dad dancing to show tunes and (yes) coming out after 40 yrs of marriage. Yup, I’d definitely have to say, my parents.

Me, alas, as both a dyke and a geek. Though my cousin Tom, youngest of four boys, is my fellow black sheep. His three oldest brothers went into finance, like their dad. Tom? Is a history teacher. His brothers married in their 20s. Tom married at 41. In a generally repressed and pessimistic family, Tom is incredibly energetic, outgoing, loving, and upbeat, even in the face of his cancer diagnosis. I admire him terrifically, and I’m awfully grateful to him for his enthusiastic embracing of my wife as a member of the family — he set a very overt example for everyone else, and it has kept awkwardness to a minimum.

I am the most unusual member of my family. I split from the ball o’ worms that are my relatives, have some fabulous people in my life, a great — weird — sense of humor, have gotten on the track of “growing myself”, because the same old, same old isn’t who I am. My family believe I am nuts.
