Hi Kate,
I posted on facebook this morning reminding folks how many people fought for women’s right to vote…..and told them to VOTE!

I registered my 33 year old son to vote by, when he wasn’t looking checked of the voter registration box on the application form for his license renewal.
When he received the voter registration verification form in the mail I reminded him of all the people that had died so he would have the right to vote.
On November 2nd we voted together.
He was really proud to have voted and he seemed a little taller. I don’t know why he had never registered to vote.

Remind them that their vote matters even more since they are voting for those like me that cannot.
As a green card holder (resident alien / permanent resident) I cannot vote but do everything else. Pay the same taxes, serve the country if ever a draft is put in place. But yes, I cannot vote.
That reminder I hope is something people do not take lightly.
As comfortable as many might feel about their lives today, I hope they recognize that those in my shoes, have little to be comfortable about. Since 9/11, our rights have been slowly stripped. I could be jailed without a warrant and kept in jail for days without any one knowing why. Could be deported if I look or act suspiciously, even thought I really may not be. And there are many other issues.
It is so important to vote tomorrow and cast the right vote. Which may not be a vote for the Right. The issues are way deeper than we have made them out to be.
It seems intelligence has been thrown out of the debate and idiocy and not-so-comic comdey has become the norm for those that want to be candidates shaping the future.
It is a sad moment in the history of a great nation. We still have the chance to redeem ourselves and our collected history. If not, tomorrow itself we would begin the journey to a dark place that will be a place we will live for a long time before climbing back up to a place of pride.
Be mindful, be smart and do not be swayed by emotion and knee-jerk reactions. Vote for the longer interests of the nation, its collected populace and for one and all. Let bigotry and small-minded and simplistic ideals be put to rest before you cast your vote for bigger ideals with more gravitas and heft.

It’s simple. I tell them I am going to vote. They are mostly conservative reactionaries so they are horrified that a moderate like me is going to vote.

That’s a tough one. Sometimes the people you love make choices with which you don’t agree. I just encourage them to be who they are and tell them that I will love them no matter what even if I don’t understand their choices. Perhaps some day we will look back and think that voting Republican isn’t really a form of mental illness. Perhaps.

I find out who will be out of town or unable to go to the polls for medical reasons and I get them absentee ballots. Then I get the completed ballots from them and mail them.

I just say if you are going to complain about the government, its policies, and the crooks who get into office regardless of your vote, then go ahead and vote since it doesn’t matter anyway you have nothing to lose and you can complain all you want. Don’t vote? Don’t complain! It’s that easy.

I tell them, if they don’t vote, don’t come bitchin’ to me about the way things are run in this country ๐

I tell them to get out there and vote as it is their right, and if they choose not to then DO NOT complain about our government. It is not your luxury.
I don’t know if it guilts anyone or not, but then again I don’t talk politics w/ my friends because I wanna keep ’em! ๐
