Bowling would have been welcomed.Prom was uncomfortable, unenjoyable and I hated it. The story is long Kate, and I don’t want you hitting your head on the keyboard as you fall asleep with the boring details.
Short version: I was talked/PUSHED into it. Dinner was the night’s highlight (what’s that tell you). The night couldn’t end fast enough for me and finally did longggg before prom was over.

Jr. year I went with an ex (because he couldn’t find another date!?), and Sr. year one of my best mates – both were kind of boring dances, and I wasn’t allowed to partake in any “after-prom” gatherings.
I did get permission to bring my mate home to carry out our own version of staying up all night but the VCR broke and we ended up just falling asleep! LOL And actually got in trouble because we were asleep holding each other and my da was the one who found us (oh da, how you took such offense at innocence…)!
I have never understood all the drama around prom – I think it’s sad that everyone has to be in such a rush to make it a gala event – you mean to tell me everyone is afraid they will NEVER have a better opportunity to have an extravagant night – as an ADULT!? When most of the things that happen on prom night will be LEGAL!? *rolls eyes*

Wow, does that bring back some awkward memories! I had just finished a 2 year torrid affair with a (female) classmate the year before and was still trying to find myself to fit in. Just to give you some context: this was 1970, my junior year, and I went to an all girls Catholic High School. I felt sorry for the boy I was with – he was in the Army and probably didn’t want to be with me either. We went to the prom, danced uncomfortably and went to dinner at a nice restaurant with several other couples afterward. We said a kissless goodnight and I was really glad it was over. Luckily, my ex wasn’t there to heighten the awkwardness. Thanks for bringing up the subject.

1973: Junior year. I asked my best friend (and crush) to go with me because I didn’t have a date. She wouldn’t do it. 1974: Senior year. I asked my neighbor, a tenth grade boy, to go with me. We have a picture. At the end of the night he felt the need to clarify that we were just friends. Beyond that, I don’t recall one thing about the prom.

You know I had a pretty good time at my proms, both jr and sr year. I went with my best friend Doug and hung out with a group of friends. This was 1968 and 1969 so no postprom plans other than blowing. The only time I ever bowled in my life…so far. Doug and I were a long way from coming out or even figuring out who we were. But my prom memories are more good than not.

Payback was awful…I dumped this “nice guy” to go with another “jerky jock”, simply to make this girl I liked jealous, because she liked the “jerky jock”…well, turns out that “jerky jock” only wnated to go to the prom with me to get to another girl from my class. Oh, the teenage angst ! lol.

Spent money on a dress, to go with a boy that I asked, to be kissed like that? Best prom memory would have been to be out of town for the night.

My first two years of high school were hell. Then I met my first real girlfriend and we were having a really really good time, even holding hands (under our jackets) on the school bus. Wow–sex, real sex!
So the second two years of high school were wonderful, although she did leave me a few years later to run off with and marry my oldest brother. So now their children are double nieces and nephews to me, aren’t they?

I had a ball both years. Went with my 3 best friends – sort of a quadruple date. Very innocent. Lot’s of dancing & laughing. Many years later I found that all the guys were as gay as me — eventually. We liked to laugh & dance and carry on.
Good times.
Pretty dresses, pretty lights, big hair & GOOD music (1967) — no arthritis. We danced all night.
